Do you have questions?

This page aims to help you with questions about costs, session length, insurance rebates or our policies. If you still have questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

What to expect.

What is the cost of a counselling session?

A 50-minute session is $143inc. GST. The cost is the same for both individual sessions and couple’s sessions.

How long are the sessions?

Both indiviudal and couples session are for 50minutes. However, it is not uncommon for a session to run a little over time, it is advised that you make allowance for this.

Do I need a doctors referral to see you?

No, you do not need a GP referral to see a counsellor. Many issues that we cover in the counselling rooms are not medically related (for instance, marriage counselling) so a medical referral is not needed. Self referral is fine.

I have a mental health plan. Can I use it to see you?

No. Yarra Valley Counselling offers counselling and psychotherapy but NOT psychological services. A mental health plan can only be used when seeing a psychologist or mental health social worker. This plan entitles you to claim ten psychology sessions in a calendar year on Medicare.  If you would like the financial support of the mental health care plan, we suggest you make an appointment with your GP. Your doctor will complete the apporpriate forms and refer you to a psychologist that can offer you this service.

Can I claim your fee through my health insurance?

Some insurers will allow you to claim the cost of your counselling. However this is not the case for all insurers or all policies. Yarra Valley Counselling is a preferred service provider for the following health funds:  Bupa, Medibank Private – AHM – HCF –  Police Health Fund – GU Health – Pheonix Health – St. Luke’s and Emergency Services Health Fund and WorkCover. Payment must be made at time of appointment and rebates are claimable through your Private Health Insurance provider. For more information about eligible rebates specific to your extras package, please check directly with your insurer.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies greatly.  Clients that arrive as a result of a crisis, or because they feel stuck commonly have an intensive number of sessions over 4 to 8 weeks then slowly ease off to the point that counselling can conclude. They may return to counselling from time to time if further challenges arise.  However, some clients come once, and that’s all they need. Other clients see counselling as part of their self-care and have regular fortnightly or monthly appointments.

Is there a cancellation policy?

Yes. If you cancel your appointment with less than 22 hours notice, or simply don’t show up, you will be charged the normal session fee.
